Castle McCulloch History

McCulloch Gold Mill was built in 1832 and operated for years as an integral part of the gold mining industry in North Carolina. Following the discovery of gold in North Carolina, a Cornish engineer named Charles McCulloch arrived in Jamestown with a plan to build a gold refinery. Combining classic English architecture with the era’s high-tech steam engine technology, McCulloch’s gold processing center served as a sophisticated refinery for local gold mining operations. Constructed from local granite stone and locally milled wood, Castle McCulloch is located on 60 acres of beautiful wooded forestland. Today, Castle McCulloch is a National and State Historic Site that functions as a special events center.
